New England Patriots play their first game in the new American Football League.
September 9, 1960
Originally the Boston Patriots, the team loses 13-10 to the Denver Broncos before 21,597 at Nickerson Field. The new team’s name was chosen from suggestions by fans and its initial logo adapted from a drawing by Boston Globe cartoonist Phil Bissell. Bob Gallagher is the team’s radio play-by-play announcer. The team moves to Fenway Park in 1963, Boston College’s Alumni Stadium in 1969, adopts its current name and moves to Schaefer Stadium (later Foxborough Stadium) in 1971, then to adjacent Gillette Stadium in 2002.
